IN BRIEF

Chevron said it will buy 228,000 acres for Marcellus Shale natural gas drilling from Chief Oil & Gas and Tug Hill.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed, although Chief Oil & Gas, with a regional Marcellus Shale office in Wexford, confirmed that none of the land sold to Chevron is in Butler County. Most of the land is primarily located in southwestern Pennsylvania.

The sale gives San Ramon, Calif.-based Chevron an additional 5 trillion cubic feet of natural gas reserves in its Marcellus leasehold. Chief is based in Dallas.

DETROIT — General Motors is recalling about 150,000 2011 Chevrolet Cruze compact sedans to verify their steering shafts were installed properly. The automaker said Wednesday it wants to inspect the intermediate steering shaft covers in Cruze models to make sure they were properly installed. The cars were built in Lordstown, Ohio, and sold in the U.S. and Canada. About 120,000 of the recalled vehicles with automatic transmissions will also be checked for proper installation of the shift linkage.GM said no crashes or injuries have been attributed to either issue and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has received no consumer complaints. The Cruze has been a hot seller for GM. In April, it sold more than 25,000, up 84 percent from sales of its predecessor, the Chevrolet Cobalt, in April 2010.
