Shop 'n Save opens at Freedom Square
CRANBERRY TWP —Shoppers in the western part of the township now have a full-service supermarket just a short trip from home.
The new 60,000 square-foot Shop ‘n Save opened with a ribbon-cutting Thursday at the Freedom Square shopping center on Freedom Road.
The store is Jim and Jeff Sorbara's sixth in the Pittsburgh area.
The floral shop just inside the door offers arrangements pre-made by on-staff florists, who will also custom make any arrangement or corsage.
The prepared foods, deli and bakery area, which takes up a side of the store, has about 100 employees kneading, slicing and dishing up items from sushi and an assortment of imported cheeses to TV show-worthy custom-made cakes.
Counters with fresh seafood and fresh cuts of meat are in the rear of the store, and a selection of refrigerated and frozen meats and seafood also are available.
In the dairy department, items are behind cooler doors in vertical refrigerated cases. Co-owner Jeff Sorbara said that all coolers are illuminated with LED lighting, which protects dairy products from warm light bulbs and uses 30 percent of the energy that traditional lighting requires.
In addition to the hot foods available in the deli area, a café is in a loft on the second floor. Sorbara said the Wi-Fi wired café seats up to 120 now, but could accommodate 250.
Breakfast is offered from 7 to 11 a.m. on weekdays and until 3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
Lunches are served in the café, which has a private community room that can be used by businesses and organizations for meetings.
Use of the room is free.
For lunchtime noshers, a different hot sandwich is available each weekday for $1.99, as are hot foods.
Shoppers can save on grocery items and gasoline with Pump Perks cards. Shop ‘n Save partners with Sunoco, where customers can save 10 cents for every $50 spent in the store.
The Cranberry store, which employs about 200 people, also has greeting card and health and beauty departments, plus a variety of organic items.
Brandee Rentz of Cranberry Township brought her young son and infant daughter to the opening.
Rentz said she lives down the street from Freedom Square, so her family watched the construction of the Shop ‘n Save.
“It's pretty, it's clean and the layout is open,” said Rentz. “And it's close to home.”
Connie Police of New Sewickley, Beaver County, is excited about the new market because it is one mile from her home.
“I could walk here if I want,” said Police.
The store is open from 6 a.m. to midnight daily.
