Butler County's great daily newspaper

Jack

First of all, liberals are not the only people who use the internet, so this is not a liberal/conservative issue.

Have you ever heard of the PUC- Public Utilities Commission? They regulate public utilities like gas and electric, water, etc. Without them, consumers would be at the mercy of the utility companies. Here in Butler, we have a monopoly on our water, gas and electric. There is only 1 company providing each service. Without regulation, if the water company decided to charge $100/gallon, we would have to pay it. We have absolutely no choice in the matter, they own the water, if we want it, we have to pay. Instead they are regulated on their charges. Is that communism?

Right now, I don't have to pay Comcast to watch movies through XFinity. I can watch them through Netflix or Hulu. Comcast is loosing money hand over fist because of these other services. What person in their right mind would pay them $50/month for HBO when you can pay $12/month for Netflix. HBO plays the same 10 movies, 1000 times for the month. With Netflix, I can watch 1000 movies a month.

Comcast wants to charge me more if I watch Netflix saying it uses more of their bandwidth. This is totally ridiculous, a packet is a packet. It doesn't take any more bandwidth to watch Netflix than it does to watch UTube, which they don't care to charge for. The difference is they don't offer a service such as UTube, so either way, they won't make any money from it.

Right now, I can go to any site I want and watch whatever I want, free from any regulation, governmental or corporate. Anyone can host a website. This is the way the internet was supposed to be from the beginning and unless we speak up, the internet as we know it, will end. Comcast - and other providers - will decide what we can see and what we can't see. They will charge us more to watch the competition until the competition is wiped out.

..sort of like it is in China and Libya. Maybe that's what you want?
