Butler teams win Invites
Michael Dreher and Xavier Krause had 24 and 19 kills, respectively, to power the Butler volleyball team to the North Hills Invitational championship on Saturday.
The Tornado, who also received 95 assists from Dustin DeFrancisis, captured all 11 sets it played en route to the title, defeating South Park, Pine-Richland, Canon-McMillan and Hopewell by identical 2-0 scores in pool play.
Butler defeated North Hills in the first playoff round before downing Seton-LaSalle 2-0 in the championship final.
The junior varsity squad also won its respective championship, also defeating Seton-LaSalle 2-0 in the finals.
Butler returns to action Tuesday at Pine-Richland.
Track and FieldBehind the performances of Paige Rittelmann, Jasmine Bailey and the 400-meter relay team, the Butler girls squad placed first at the Tri-State Invitational Saturday at West Mifflin.Rittelmann finished first in the high jump with a leap of 5-4 as did the 400 relay team of Paige Allen, Kennedy Evans, Katelyn Wetzel and Bailey (50.3).Bailey also finished in second place in the 200 (27.15) and the 400 (1:01.93).Butler won the meet with 80 points, 13 more than Hickory (67).The Tornado return to the track Tuesday at Shaler.• The Slippery Rock boys and girls teams also had several medalists at the meet.Ryan Thompson placed fifth in the boys 1,600 (4:37.1) and seventh in the 800 (2:04.43) while Davis Dimit was eighth in the 110 hurdles (15.88) and Nate Fowler set a personal best in the discus (143-3).In the girls meet, Bre Northcott was fourth in the shot put (a state-qualifier distance of 36-4) and sixth in the discus (107-5) while Jessica Bennett was seventh in the 3,200 (12:22.77) and Morgan Siebka seventh in the 100 hurdles (16.84).
