Gruber takes 2nd in backstroke
LEWISBURG — Maggie Gruber of Mars placed second in the girls 100-yard backstroke Thursday at the PIAA Class AA Swimming Championships at Bucknell University.
Gruber, who won a state title in the butterfly Wednesday, finished the backstroke in a school-record time of 55.46 seconds. Mercyhurst Prep's Marie Georger won the event in 55.34.
Gruber's sophomore season included two WPIAL titles, a state title and several school, WPIAL and state records.
“She told me she felt no pressure today and she just went out and gave it her all,” said Mars coach Heidi Brandon. “In Maggie, I saw a focused kid this year who worked hard all season long.”
Shady Side Academy senior Anne Marie Bilott, a Butler County resident, placed sixth in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.19) and swam on the Indians' 400 freestyle relay squad that finished third at 3:33.47.
