Outdoors shows break up winter blahs

The 2011 Eastern Sports and Outdoor Show is North America’s largest hunting, fishing and outdoors event. The show, which is being held at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex near Harrisburg, runs through Feb. 13.

I attended the show several years ago and found that it had something for everyone interested in any outdoors pursuit. Hunting, fishing, camping, culinary arts, dog training, art and photography exhibits, and educational demonstrations filled the weeklong event.

I was pleased to locate a Ned Smith print and it hangs proudly in my office, where I enjoy it daily.

The show annually brings together outdoors enthusiasts from the eastern seaboard and Canada in one central location to see and hear experts lecture and exhibit the skills and techniques of their sports.

This year, fishing expert Babe Winkelman will be at the show Feb. 11 to 13. Hunting and archery greats Chuck Adams, Michael Waddell and Adam Hays will be among the dozens of well-known outdoors experts. The television team of Pat Reeves and Nicole Jones will be there as well.

If you are planning an outdoors vacation in 2011, this show would be the right place to start. You will find literally hundreds of vendors who are putting together great packages for any type of adventure.

Does a family fishing vacation at a remote Canadian lakeside cabin interest you? How about a moose hunt in Alberta or photography in Alaska?

Waterfowl hunts in Maryland, Mexico or Canada, archery hunts for monster whitetails in the Midwest and African safari hunts and photo shoots will be offered as well.

For anglers, fly fishing for rainbows, salmon and brook trout or deep sea adventures off the Atlantic coast can be made a reality in one trip around the show.

I’m interested in meeting some of the great wildlife artists whose work will be on display.

Wilderness Editions Gallery, Gerald W. Putt, Laura Mark-Finberg and Dan Christ will have prints and original artwork. Tim Flanigan will have his exhibition and lecture available for photographers.

Chef Albert Wutsch will delight you with his delicious culinary art presentations. Food vendors will be located throughout the show, including Butler County’s Con Yeager Spice Company of Harmony.

If the idea of heading to Harrisburg throws you off, I can recommend two Western Pennsylvania sport shows coming up at Laurel High School, near New Castle, in February, and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. March 5 at Moniteau High.

Beaver Boy and I were planning to go to Harrisburg Saturday to meet some members of Steelers Nation for a mini Super Bowl party and sports show event.

We will do our best to represent Western Pennsylvania and pull for the Steelers’ seventh Lombardi Trophy.
