Super Bowl excess needs to be sacked

Super Bowl media day needs to go the way of the Pro Bowl: wiped from existence like pass defense, muddy fields and single-bar face masks.

What did we learn at the event on Tuesday?

• Brett Keisel hasn’t shaved since June and his beard shall from now on be called, “Da Beard.”

• James Harrison is still bitter about his fines, commenting that the NFL should lay pillows down to cushion the fall of the dudes he tackles.

He also showed his surly side when he barked at an NFL Network reporter, “They took $100,000 out of my pocket. You think I’m not bitter?”

• Ben Roethlisberger is trying

way too hard to be Mr. Likeable. I think I got a cavity while watching him interact with the media, there was so much saccharin. He smiled wider than Julia Roberts.• Hines Ward looks silly in a Troy Polamalu wig.• Polamalu is spelled P-O-L-A-M-A-L-U.• The (Steelers/Packers) are a great team. They are going to be the biggest challenge to date for the (Packers/Steelers).Every year the NFL media day gets more and more absurd — and less and less useful. There are so many media members there that really shouldn’t be there — media types who think asking the wackiest, most off-base question makes him or her the best journalist since Bob Woodward — that the legitimate questions get lost in the shuffle. There’s nothing to be gleaned from such a circus. It needs to go.In fact, there should be a moratorium on the entire Super Bowl week. The NFL Network is spending 100 hours on coverage leading up to the Super Bowl. What are we going to learn in 100 hours that we wouldn’t learn in, say, 50 or 40 or even one.One hundred hours? That’s 56.6 minutes for every player in the game.I don’t need 56.6 minutes of news on Steelers long snapper Greg Warren, although that would be time better spent than hearing about the nonstory that was the Sports Illustrated scoop about no teammates coming to Roethlisberger’s defense during Roger Goodell’s investigation.More time should be spent on issues that really matter to fans, like if we’ll have to become Calgary Stampeders fans to get our football fix next fall.My solution has been this: change the channel. I’ll watch “Three’s Company” reruns (oh, that crazy Jack Tripper) and switch to the big game at 6:25 p.m. Sunday. And that’s what it all comes down to: the game. Nothing uttered this week is going to change what happens between the lines on Sunday. My pick: Steelers 35, Packers 28.If you watched media day, you heard it here one million-nine-hundred-and-ninety-first.Mike Kilroy is a sports writer for the Butler Eagle.
