Steelers will beat Pack at own game

Given the scope of their season, two things are certain about the Green Bay Packers.

1. They play close games.

2. They love to blitz.

Those also are the two reasons why the Steelers will succeed in grabbing their seventh Super Bowl ring in eight tries Sunday.

Green Bay has never trailed by more than seven points in a game this season, yet it found a way to lose six times. Those six losses are by a combined margin of 20 points.

The Steelers find ways to win close games. They completed a 58-yard pass to Antonio Brown on a big third-and-19 play to knock out Baltimore in the first round of the AFC playoffs.

They converted two critical third downs in the waning moments to bounce the New York Jets from the AFC title game.

All season, the Steelers have found ways to survive tight battles.

Granted, the Packers held on to win a tight one over Chicago in the NFC title game. The Bears were fighting back with a third-string quarterback.

If they’re fighting back with a healthy Jay Cutler, maybe the Steelers are prepping for Chicago right now.

There’s no denying the Packers’ blitz, nor its results. Green Bay recorded 10 sacks in its three road playoff wins. The Pack sacked Cutler six times in their win over the Bears in the regular season finale.

Steelers fans will remember Dom Capers. He was a pretty good defensive coach when he was with the Steelers and blitz packages were his big thing back then.

Now the Packers defensive coordinator, Capers still loves the blitz.

And Ben Roethlisberger will take his hits and go to the ground a few times, just like he did in 2009, when the Packers sacked him five times — and Big Ben threw for 503 yards against them.

Don’t expect Roethlisberger to throw for 503 yards this time. Do expect him to burn that blitz a few times.

Green Bay’s defense is susceptible to the run and the Steelers will run the ball plenty — certainly enough to allow play-action passes to be effective.

This is Big Ben’s third Super Bowl and he has yet to put together a big game in one, despite the winning drive against Arizona two years ago.

Three’s a charm.

Roethlisberger is a blitz-breaker and he will spoil the Packers’ scheme that way.

When the game is close at the end, Green Bay will draw the short straw. That’s just who the Packers have been this year.

Big Ben will be the game’s MVP in a 24-20 Steeler victory.
