SRU defeated in wild affair

SLIPPERY ROCK — The scene was playing out perfectly for C.J. Bahr.

Slippery Rock University’s senior placekicker — performing on Senior Day in his final game at N. Kerr Thompson Stadium — booted a 37-yard field goal Saturday with 2:08 remaining to give his team a 38-35 lead over C.W. Post.

The kick tied SRU’s career field goal record and completed a Rock comeback from a 14-point deficit.

Perfect.

Then C.W. Post rewrote the script.

Pioneers quarterback Erik Anderwkavich hit receiver Joe Botti in stride down the left sideline, the play resulting in a 63-yard touchdown and handing C.W. Post (7-4) a 42-38 victory with 1:32 remaining.

SRU’s final possession began at its own 43-yard line, but Ryan Sabo was intercepted by Ronnie Modik on a third-and-14 play with 48 seconds left.

“C.J.’s kick was another clutch one,” SRU coach George Mihalik said. “I’m not sure what happened on that pass play. I didn’t get a good look at it.

“But that’s not the way this was supposed to end.”

The Rock (6-5) dropped its final three games of the aseason by a combined 16-point margin.

“We kept throwing underneath, underneath, underneath ... all part of setting that play up,” C.W. Post coach Bryan Collins said. “The play call came from the sidelines.

“Their corner bit and our guy got behind him.”

End of story. And a busy story it was.

The teams combined for 55 first downs, 992 yards of offense and only three punts. Anderwkavich torched The Rock’s PSAC-leading pass defense for 314 yards and four touchdowns.

SRU held the league’s top receiver, Darnel Williams, to four catches for 34 yards and a touchdown. But Grayson Laurino caught five passes for 128 yards and two TDs, Botti three for 109 and a score.

“Neither team could stop the other. We’ve been involved in a few of these,” Collins said.

The Pioneers certainly couldn’t stop Rock running back Akeem Satterfield, who carried 46 times for 271 yards and four touchdowns. Despite playing on a bum ankle most of the year, the sophomore finished the year with 1,352 yards rushing and 20 touchdowns.

Satterfield finished one TD shy of Lamonte Coleman’s single-season team record of 21, set in 1994.

“I’m ready for another 46 carries if it means we could still win the game,” Satterfield said. “My ankle felt better and better each week, but there were times this year when I couldn’t make my cuts on it.”

Among the 12 seniors ending their Rock careers Saturday was center and Seneca Valley graduate Brandon Fusco, who will likely be selected in this spring’s NFL Draft.

“I’ll say it right here. He’s the best center in all of Division II and one of the best in the country, period,” Mihalik said.

Collins had no problem echoing those sentiments after winning his 100th game in 13 years at C.W. Post.

“I’ve spent my career coaching in Division II and I haven’t seen a center as good as that kid,” Collins said. “You can’t prepare for him because there’s no way you can simulate his blocking range.

“He led a great line that was just blowing us off the line of scrimmage.”

Fusco said he came to SRU “as an honoprable mention all-conference high school player and I’m leaving as an All-American.

“They showed me how to play the game here. I wish we had ended better, but I wouldn’t trade my time here for anything.”

Notes: Bahr’s field goal was the 35th of his career, tying Morgan Anderson’s career record. ... Senior cornerback Robert Doiley had a 55-yard punt return for a touchdown called back by a penalty. ... WR Devin Goda had a season-low two catches for six yards, giving him 54 catches for 590 yards on the year. ... LB Zach Sheridan had 11 tackles Saturday, giving him 102 for the campaign.
