The 2010 Knoch football team has become a steamroller.

The Knights (6-0, 3-0) look to move into a tie with Mars for first place in the Greater Allegheny Conference Friday night when they travel to Kittanning (1-5, 1-2) for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.

Knoch has outscored its opposition 274-49 — an average of nearly 46-8.

Now the Knights are playing a Wildcats team coming off their first win after it overcame a two-touchdown deficit to defeat Valley, 29-17.

"Teams that have character — and (the Wildcats) do — get better during the season," Knoch coach Mike King said. "They have some weapons offensively. We have to play responsibility defense."

Only two teams — Ford City and Peters Township — have scored more than 20 points against Kittanning.

Knoch hasn't played Kittanning since 2003, when the Wildcats scored a 28-21 victory.

"Kittanning has always had tough kids and they play tough defense," King said "(Coach) Sam Panchik was a loyal assistant to Harry Beckwith, who coached down there when I played at Knoch."

Panchik is in his eighth year as head coach at Kittanning, following 22 years as an assistant under Beckwith.

"We've cut down on our mistakes and have been competitive in recent weeks," Panchik said. "Or offensive line's blocking has come together, and it's making a difference."

Taylor Fink leads the Wildcats with 283 yards rushing, including 17 carries for 100 yards and four touchdowns last week. Bo Bowser returned an interception for a score to help turn around the Valley game.

"Bo is a three-year starter back there and a big-play guy for us on both sides of the ball. We move him around a lot," Panchik said.

Andrew Scholl and Trevor Harmon split quarterbacking duties for Kittanning. Scholl is returning from an injury.

"Andrew has better command of our offense and is more of a running threat," Panchik said. "Trevor has the stronger arm in the passing game."

Knoch quarterback Ky Kenyon, tailback Andrew Rumburg-Goodlin and fullback Adam Tuzikow have combined for 1,358 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns.

"Kittanning plays a disciplined 50 defense and they've been outstanding against the run," King said.

Deer Lakes (4-2) at Freeport (4-2) 7:30 p.m., Friday

The numbers: Hickory RB-DB Marlon Pegues has shown a knack for the big play. A week after scoring two touchdowns of more than 80 yards against Wilmington, Pegues returned the opening kickoff 82 yards for a score against Karns City. He also intercepted a pass and flipped it back to a teammate for a 90-yard TD return. ... Big plays have haunted the Rockets defense. Sharon scored four touchdowns of 25 yards or more last week against them. ... The Rockets offense managed only 99 yards against the Tigers.
