FREEPORT — Apollo-Ridge and Freeport both were close to the century mark in penalty yards Friday night.

But Apollo-Ridge didn't have senior running back Jake Campbell, who scored four touchdowns for the Yellowjackets in a 35-7 football win at Swartz Field.

After allowing the Vikings (0-6) to tie the game at the end of the first half, Freeport (4-2) came out strong in the second half. The action started with sophomore quarterback Brendan Lynch finding senior receiver Derek Durand downfield for a 26-yard touchdown pass.

Freeport coach John Gaillot said his team vowed to come out strong in the second half.

"After we got our juices flowing near the end of the first half, we challenged ourselves to take control in the second half," Gaillot said. "I'm proud that the kids worked hard in the second half and won this game."

Campbell was the main player to take control for the Yellowjackets, scoring a 45-yard rushing touchdown with two minutes to play in the third quarter and adding another 3-yarder midway through the fourth.

Those weren't Campbell's biggest moments of the night, though. That came on defense when the Vikings were inside Freeport's 5-yard line. Apollo-Ridge quarterback Josh Zelonka fired a pass to the middle of the end zone and Campbell stepped in front it, tipping the ball in the air before catching it. He ran the length of the field to score a 99-yard touchdown with 28 seconds left in the game.

Campbell said he wasn't sure if he could get the ball after he tipped it, but when he caught it, he knew his teammates would set up blocks and allow him to get in for the touchdown.

"I reached out and tipped it," he said. "After that, I just stretched out and hoped I could get control of it. Once I did, I just made a few cuts behind blockers and outran the defense."

Even with the victory, it still wasn't a perfect performance for Freeport, which was flagged for 12 penalties for 110 yards. Apollo-Ridge helped Freeport by committing nine penalties for 99 yards.
