Jessica Spafford left July 15 to participate in a five-week opera program in Salzburg, Austria, through the University of Miami's Frost School of Music. She was chosen as one of 40 vocalists internationally to participate.She will study voice and the German language and will perform in the Salzburg Music Festival.When she returns, she will enter her senior year at Ohio Wesleyan University, where she studies voice performance with Marilyn Nims. Spafford was Butler County's Junior Miss 2007 and her scholarship money helped support this opportunity.She is the daughter of Jim and Jean Spafford of Chicora.——The St. Francis University Science Outreach Center hosted 21 high school students from June 21 to 25 for the Science and the Art of Discovery Summer Academy.The program teaches students how scientific knowledge is gained and the process of conducting and communicating scientific investigations.Local students who participated were
