JEFFERSON TWP — Knoch is looking for a head girls basketball coach — again.

Rob Greenleaf, 43, has resigned the position after only one season to accept the head varsity boys basketball position at Ford City.

The South Butler School District accepted Greenleaf's resignation at Wednesday's school board meeting.

Greenleaf had been a boys basketball coach at Franklin Regional, Northgate and North Allegheny in recent years. He coached girls basketball at Franklin Regional prior to coming to Knoch.

Greenleaf has been a teacher in the North Allegheny district for 11 years and remains in that capacity.

"I knew I'd get back into the boys game eventually, just not this soon," Greenleaf said. "The opportunity presented itself at Ford City, so I took it."

While Greenleaf accepted the Ford City post last week, he continued to coach Knoch's girls through their summer basketball season. He also coached Ford City's boys for their last summer game.

"Anytime you work with people, even for one season ... you see them every day, work with them for hours a day, you grow attached to them," Greenleaf said. "It's always hard to leave."

Knoch was 7-13 overall, 4-8 in section play under Greenleaf. The Lady Knights lost five games by the margin of six points or fewer.

The top four scorers on the team graduated this past spring.

"They have a young team, but they had a good summer," Greenleaf said. "They won more games than they lost and have been very competitive."

Ford City is coming off a 7-15, 5-7 season that ended with a 70-31 loss to Quaker Valley in the first round of the Class AA playoffs.

The Sabers' section title two years ago was the program's first in 30 years.

"Ford City's program has tradition, but it's in the 1950s, 60s and 70s," Greenleaf said. "They're dedicating their gym to the coach from that era, Hube Ruppert, and the whole town is excited about that ceremony.

"There's a passion for basketball in this community that I'm really getting into."

Knoch is posting its open girls basketball position internally before extending its search.
