HARRISBURG — Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell said partisanship in Harrisburg and media treatment are making him eager to wrap up his second term in office.
Rendell said Friday he's "ready to get out" and is looking forward to relinquishing the governorship in January.
He added "nobody cares anymore about doing the right thing" and he's "had it with the media."
The governor is in the midst of budget negotiations with the politically divided Legislature that are particularly challenging because of a severe drop-off in state tax collections.
HARRISBURG — The editorial boards of Philadelphia's two largest newspapers say state Supreme Court Chief Justice Ronald Castille isn't fit for his job.The Philadelphia Daily News wrote Friday the appearance of impropriety in a $12 million deal Castille oversaw to find land for a new family court eroded the public trust.The Inquirer's editorial called for Castille to resign as chief justice, although not necessarily from the bench.Castille declined to comment through a spokesman.
WILKES-BARRE — A northeastern Pennsylvania court official agreed to plead guilty to one count of lying to federal agents investigating him for accepting bribes.Former Luzerne County Clerk of Courts Robert Reilly has signed a plea agreement with prosecutors. According to court documents filed Thursday, Reilly told the FBI he received a single $200 campaign contribution when he'd in fact received multiple payments unrelated to his campaign.Reilly resigned from his courthouse job earlier this month. He faces up to 5 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
PITTSBURGH — An off-duty Pittsburgh police detective will stand trial on charges he choked a fellow motorist and threatened him with a gun after the man sideswiped the detective's car.State police say Det. Bradley Walker, 43, kicked 29-year-old Jarret Fate's car, then broke a window to reach in and grab the man by the throat May 1.At a preliminary hearing Thursday, Walker's attorney said his client repeatedly identified himself as a police officer and was confronting a hit-and-run driver.Fate said Walker never identified himself as an officer after Fate had pulled over in a safe place where the men could exchange insurance information.Fate remains on desk duty and faces trial for aggravated assault, unlawful restraint and other charges.
