MIAMI — Zach Thomas retired as a member of the Miami Dolphins.
The longtime linebacker signed a ceremonial contract with the Dolphins at their training facility in Davie, Fla., Thursday so he could leave the game as part of the franchise he spent 12 seasons with. A fifth-round draft pick out of Texas Tech in 1996, Thomas became a star for the Dolphins. With Miami, Thomas had 1,038 tackles, 19Z\x sacks and 17 interceptions in 168 games, and he was chosen for seven Pro Bowls.
COLOGNE, Germany — The Penguins' Evgeni Malkin scored twice and Russia beat Canada again at the world ice hockey championships Thursday, eliminating the Olympic champion with a convincing 5-2 win.Russia beat Canada in the past two world finals. Together, they have won the title 49 times, and unbeaten Russia has an excellent chance at a record 26th this weekend.
SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock University senior softball player Jessica Kortz was named Daktronics Inc. first team All-Atlantic Region in voting by the region's sports information directors.A catcher, Kortz hit 12 homers, collected 45 RBI and had a .738 slugging percentage. The 45 RBI marked a single-season Rock record and her 40 homers and 153 RBI are SRU career marks.Kortz batted .365 in her four-year career with 178 hits, including 28 doubles.
IRVING, Texas — Jason Day birdied four of his first six holes Thursday on his way to a 4-under 66 for a share of the first-round lead when play was suspended at the Byron Nelson.The threatening skies never actually drenched the TPC Four Seasons course, but the radar looked so scary there was a delay of 3 hours, 44 minutes.Joe Durant finished with an eagle and a birdie to match Day at 66. Steve Elkington, Hunter Mahan and Jarrod Lyle were still on the course with scores of 4-under.
