NATRONA HEIGHTS — Entering the WPIAL baseball playoffs on a 15-game winning streak, Freeport's offense had found multiple ways of scoring runs.

On Wednesday, it couldn't find any.

The Yellowjackets, who had a 12-0 section record and averaged 8.3 runs per game, were limited to two hits in a 6-0 loss to Bishop Canevin in the first round of the Class AA playoffs.

The Crusaders' Zach Washinski pitched a complete game, allowing just a two-out double to Freeport's Ryan Siegel in the fourth inning and a one-out double to Ricky Francart in the sixth.

"We hit the ball — just at people," said Yellowjackets coach Chris Graczyk. "I think, off the top of my head, we had six line-drive outs.

"(Washinski) wasn't fooling us. We hit him — but give them credit. They put the ball in play and they did what we wanted our defense to do," he added.

The Crusaders (10-5) opened the game by loading the bases with one out, but Freeport starter Ryan Dunn induced a 4-6-3 double play to end the threat.

In the second and third innings, Dunn wasn't as fortunate.

Canevin's Matt Butter opened the second with a single and went to third on a perfect hit-and-run single by Michael Bolla. Logan Moore followed with a sacrifice fly to give the Crusaders a 1-0 lead. One out later, Colin Jones lined an RBI single to double the lead.

In the third, Washinski singled, then Patrick Leyland, a University of Maryland recruit and the son of former Pittsburgh Pirates and current Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland, smacked a run-scoring double.

Two outs later, Bolla added an RBI single to make it 4-0.

"This was a game we knew we had to score some runs," Crusaders coach Dale Checketts said. "We didn't take any innings off. You have to do that against a good team like that."

Washinski, a College of Wooster (Ohio) recruit, was cruising along, allowing a two-out walk to Freeport's Jake Campbell in the third inning and the two doubles through the first six innings.

"He accepted the challenge. He read the press clippings and knew what (the Yellowjackets) could do. He challenged them, and you could see what

he can do," Checketts said.Bolla added an RBI double in the fifth inning, and an error in the sixth inning plated Canevin's final run.Freeport (15-2) opened the seventh with a walk, but a great scoop by Crusaders third baseman Frank Vance on a hard grounder by Derek Knapp started a double play.Shane Gallagher followed with a walk, but Washinski got Don Pastoria to ground into the game-ending out."(The Crusaders) are not a No. 12 ranked team," said Graczyk, whose team was the No. 5 seed. "We just as easily could have been No. 12."Still, the Yellowjackets dream season came to a close a bit prematurely, but Graczyk remains optimistic about the program's future."They'll keep their heads up," said Graczyk. "We started building a nice nucleus that's coming back next year."
