HARMONY — The site of a proposed informational and tourist kiosk has been moved to a new location because of traffic and safety concerns.

The proposed kiosk, which would resemble a log cabin, is a project of Historic Harmony and would have pamphlets and brochures promoting businesses and tourist opportunities in the historic community.

The original proposed site across from the former Kasing Dodge property on Route 68 was deemed too unsafe by business owners. The new site, a parking lot on Main Street about a block and a half away from the Kasing property, also is owned by the borough.

The kiosk would be built and maintained by Historic Harmony, a preservation group in the borough, and would cost the borough little or no money. Previous plans said the structure wouldn't be larger than 20 feet by 15 feet.

John Ruch, president of Historic Harmony, gave a letter to council Tuesday outlining the plans for the new site. He hopes the issue will be discussed and possibly voted on at next month's council meetings.

Councilman Jack Shanks explained the decision to move the site after a resident questioned the move. He said the idea to move the kiosk was supported by business owners and Historic Harmony because of the potential for traffic or pedestrian accidents at the original location on Route 68.

"It's a great idea and it's part of our heritage," Shanks said. "But the safety issue was the thing."

He also said signs could be placed along Route 68 that would give passing motorists an indication of the kiosk's location.
