Thomas R. McKernan, 61, of Baden died peacefully Wednesday with his loving family by his side after a long battle with cancer.

Born Sept. 9, 1948, in Oakland, a son of the late Edward V. McKernan Jr. and Margaret McGovern McKernan, he was a member of the SS. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church, Asbestos Workers Local 2 and the Glenwillard Boat Club and was an avid classic car enthusiast.

He served his country in the Army, having survived two tours of duty in Vietnam.

Surviving are his wife, Gayle Prokopovich McKernan; three daughters, Angela (McKernan) Borgo and her husband, Stephen, of Hampton, Lora McKernan and her fiance, Joel Almuete, of Millersville, Md., and Carrie McKernan and her fiance, Daniel Quinlan Jr., of Baden; two stepchildren, Jason Mazzetti and his wife, Amanda, of Bridgewater and Jessie Mazzetti and her fiance, Aaron Thompson, of New Sewickley Township; seven grandchildren, Brock and Heath Borgo, Ian and Carlie Almuete, Connor and Cadence Mazzetti and Trent Thompson; his former spouse and the mother of his three daughters, Linda (Wysun) McKernan of Hampton; five brothers, Edward V. McKernan III of Butler, Kevin MeKernan and his wife, Candace, of Evans City, Kenneth McKernan of McCandless, Dennis McKernan of Evans City and Michael McKernan and his wife, Linda, of Altoona; three sisters, Susan Lipecky and her husband, Dennis, of McCandless, Nora "Missy" Sutermaster and her husband, Carl, of McCandless and Elizabeth Bertsch and her husband, Pat "Skip"; and numerous nieces and nephews.

McKernan, who died Wednesday, March 24, 2010, will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today in the <B>John SYKA FUNERAL HOME INC.</B>, 833 Kennedy Drive, Ambridge, where a service will be conducted at 12:30 p.m. Saturday followed by a divine liturgy at 1 p.m. in SS. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church with Father Michael Polosky officiating. Interment will follow in the SS. Peter and Paul Cemetery.A parastas service will be held at 7 p.m. today in the funeral home.Members of the Beaver County Special Unit will meet at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in the cemetery to provide full military honors.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to SS.
