The Butler Area Sewer Authority Board on Tuesday accepted a $425,000 loan from the Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority.

Interest rates are 2.414 percent for years 1 to 5, and 3.117 percent for years 6 to 20.

The loan will help pay for construction of two sewer-stormwater storage tanks to be built next to Butler Township's salt storage building in the township park.

The tanks will slowly release the water to the treatment plant instead of overwhelming pump stations and manholes.

A total of seven tanks will be built in the BASA service area to help control raw sewage overflows during high water events such as rain storms or snow melts.

BASA and the state Department of Environmental Protection are working through an agreement to make sure the overflow problem ends. The deadline for the project is June 2012.

The entire project is expected to cost $30 million.
