JACKSON TWP — There's no quit in the Seneca Valley baseball team.

On Monday afternoon, there was no shortage of clutch hits, either.

When Raiders trailed North Hills 7-5 entering their last at-bat, SV's Jake Double reached on an error with one out before Mike Hughes, Justin Stanger and Pete Vicente each singled. Vicente's hit scored Double to make the score 7-6.

That brought Kyle Gorniak to the plate with the bases loaded.

The first-year starting outfielder laced a single up the middle, scoring Hughes and courtesy runner Anthony Sklarsky for a dramatic 8-7 Section 1-AAAA win at Raider Field.

"The pitch I hit was a curveball, but it didn't curve much," said Gorniak. "I was surprised that their starter was still in the game at that point."

That pitcher was North Hills' Jesse Bauer, who threw more 100 pitches in the game.

He struck out seven, didn't walk a batter, but did surrender the eight runs on 13 hits.

"We had a couple of other guys warming up in the fifth inning, but Jesse had already gone the distance in a couple of games this season," said Indians coach Nate Buttenfield. "He's trained for it and, late in the game, it was his to win or lose."

"He dominated a couple of innings," SV coach Eric Semega said. "But in general, I thought we hit him well, especially in that last inning.

"The error in the seventh changed the complexion of the game," the Raiders coach added. "We were able to take advantage of it and I'm proud of the kids for that."

Another source of pride for the Raiders was the performance of reliever Tyler Budisky, who came in for starter Chris Dorogy with one out in the top of the fourth inning and the Raiders trailing 6-4.

The right-hander gave up a run-scoring groundout before retiring 10 of the last 12 batters he faced.

Budisky earned the win following a 3 2/3-inning outing that featured five strikeouts and no walks.

"It's amazing what happens when you throw strikes," Semega said. "(Budisky) was a huge reason why we were able to win this game."

Things didn't look as promising in the top of the second inning.

After setting the Indians (3-2, 1-2) down in order in the first, Dorogy faced the bases loaded with one out in the next inning.

NH's Dan DiMatteo and Matt Kuban managed consecutive two-run singles and both Bauer and Taylor Schmidt picked up RBI base hits.

When the dust settled, the Indians had scored six runs on six hits.

"We had our big inning there in the second, but after that, they kept us off-balance," said Buttenfield. "We couldn't get any more clutch hits after that."

In fact, North Hills would collect only two hits over the final five innings, beginning when Dorogy rebounded to pitch a scoreless third frame.

All that was left for the Raiders (3-2, 2-0) was to make a comeback, which they began to do in the bottom of the second.

Stanger's leadoff double was followed by a base hit from Vicente and RBI-singles courtesy of Gorniak and Jack Graham, who later scored on a wild pitch to make it 6-3.

Gorniak singled home Hughes in the third inning.

Trailing 7-4 in the bottom of the fifth, Double hit a solo home run over the right-field fence.

Gorniak ended the game with three singles, a double and four RBI.

"When we were down 6-0, we knew we had to keep battling, always keep battling," he said.
