BUTLER TWP — The Butler baseball team found out two things about their new on-campus field.

The wind blows out to center.

No lead is safe.

Hampton hit four home runs in the first three innings on the way to a 6-0 lead over the Golden Tornado.

But Butler crawled back into the game and won it with two outs in the bottom of the seventh on a walk-off RBI single by Ryan Fennell to christen the new field with a 7-6 win Thursday.

"Isn't that something to have a ballgame like that on the new field?" said Butler coach Dave Florie "To me, this is a field of dreams."

Early on, it had the look of a nightmare.

Hampton left fielder Frank Poerio hit the first home run at the new park on a wind-aided shot that barely cleared the sign marking 360 feet to center in the top of the first inning.

Designated hitter Zach Davis hit a similar home run for the Talbots in the top of the second inning, and Brett Williams and Matt Coholich each hit deep homers in the third inning.

But Butler (3-0) was undaunted.

C.J. Miller relieved starting pitcher Zac Sessa after Coholich's two-run homer put the finishing touches on the Hampton offensive outburst and shut down the Talbots over the next 4Z\c innings.

Miller fanned six, walked one and scattered three hits to pick up the win.

"He's not just crafty, he's very smart," Florie said of Miller. "He has command of a lot of pitches. What he did today was really incredible."

Fennell struggled at the plate in his first three at-bats, but came through in the seventh with two outs by lining a single down the left-field line that brought pinch runner Wes Henderson around from second for the dramatic victory.

"I'm going to remember it forever," Fennell said. "Earlier in the game, I was getting under the ball. I was just thinking, 'Stay on top. Stay on top.' And I got the game-winning hit at the new field. Pretty special."

Butler got into position to win it in the home half of the seventh by scoring two runs each in the third, fourth and fifth innings.

John Crumby, who went 3-for-3, hit the first Butler home run at the new park to lead off the bottom of the fifth.

The Golden Tornado have been waiting a long time for a field of its own, playing home games at Highfield Park and Pullman Park the last two seasons before building its own diamond nestled between the football stadium and the school's tennis courts.

In February, players shoveled snow off the field to aid in the melting. The field was still too soggy to use earlier this week.

The game was only the third time the players had been on the field, but they were happy with what they saw.

"It's our own field at our own school," Fennell said. "It just feels great."
