PITTSBURGH — Their won-loss record might be ordinary, but their postseason performance has been something to behold.

The Golden Knights of West Chester Bayard Rustin, 10-8-2 during the regular hockey season, have won four consecutive Flyers Cup playoff games to earn a repeat trip to the Class A state championship game.

Bayard Rustin has a repeat opponent as well, taking on Mars at 11 a.m. Thursday at Mellon Arena.

The Planets are 23-2 and riding a 10-game winning streak. But they suffered a 5-0 loss to the Golden Knights on the eastern side of the state in last year's season finale.

"It's like we didn't even show up that day," Mars coach Steve Meyers said. "Our kids knew (Rustin) didn't get our best shot.

"Going into the Penguins Cup final ... our kids wanted another shot at Rustin more than that second Cup."

They got their wish.

While Bayard Rustin has won the past two Flyers Cups — the school has been in existence only four years — West Chester owns the past four. West Chester Henderson and West Chester East won the Flyers Cup the two years before Rustin.

"The West Chester area is a hotbed for hockey," Rustin coach Nick Russo said. "There are tons of quality hockey players around here.

"Our record is a bit deceiving because we play in a strong league. Downingtown East is in our league. They're undefeated and are coming to play Greater Latrobe for the Double-A state title."

Bayard Rustin also plays numerous teams in higher classifications outside of its own league.

"These kids are used to facing the best. And they'll be facing the best in Mars," Russo said.

Brian Christie leads the Golden Knights with 35 goals this season. No one else on the squad has scored more than nine. Starting goaltender Zach Sheriko has a 2.88 goals-against average.

By comparison, Mars had nine players — Elliot Tisdale, Tyler Whiteford, Mike Mazzotta, Nick Blaney, Robert Sigurdsson, Austin Heakins, Tyler Thomas, Blake Friday and Russell Miller — score at least 10 goals during the regular season.

A 10th player, C.J. Thibault, scored his 10th goal of the season during the playoffs.

"We wear most of our opponents down with our depth," Meyers said.

They won't wear Bayard Rustin down. Like the Planets, the Golden Knights will have a full 20-player roster on the bench Thursday.

Eight players have scored goals in the playoffs for Mars. Tisdale leads the team with seven playoff goals and 30 overall.

Mars goalie Tyler Stepke had a 1.27 goals-against average during the regular season. He stopped 20 of 21 shots in the Planets' 4-1 win over Serra Catholic in the Penguins Cup finals.

"Mars gets to play at home this time and that may make a big difference this year," Russo said. "We're the team making the long trip this time and they know that ice. We've never played there.

"We've won games 2-1 and 1-0, we've won high-scoring type games. Our kids can adjust to whatever type of game it is."
