Pitchers rule day in Knoch win vs. Freeport

Knoch starter Sam Stone picked up the victory Monday in the Knights' 4-3 win over Freeport.

A trio of pitchers came up big for the Knoch baseball team in the season opener.

Sam Stone got the win for the Knights, and Nathan Junk and Cullen Hinderliter fared well in relief Monday in Knoch's 4-3 win over Freeport at Pullman Park.

Stone struck out three and walked two in three innings

Junk struck out six in three shutout inning and Hinderliter worked the seventh for the save.

John DeWalt had two singles and an RBI for the Knights.

Ricky Francart paced Freeport by going 3-for-4 with a double.

• Grove City took advantage of Neshannock's wildness, scoring 11 runs on five hits in the Eagles' 11-0, six-inning win.

GC's Alex Miklos drew five walks and scored three runs.

Cole Baxter won four matches, including a win over the top seed, and placed fourth out of 55 wrestlers in the 160-pound weight class in the junior division of the National High School Coaches Association National Championships last weekend in Virginia Beach, Va.The Butler wrestler earned All-American status for his performance.The Golden Tornado's Blake Caudill won three matches in the freshman 103-pound division before being eliminated.In junior high action, Butler's Ryan Hannon placed fifth at 145 pounds at the Pennsylvania Junior State Wrestling Tournament in Wilkes-Barre. He won four of six matches.Connor Foust competed at 75 pounds, winning one match and losing two.

Tanner Kotch scored three goals and J.J. Raabe had two in Butler's 6-5 win over Fox Chapel.
