No. 2 Kansas clinches title by pounding Kansas St.
LAWRENCE, Kan. — Sherron Collins had 17 points in his final game at Allen Fieldhouse and No. 2 Kansas beat No. 5 Kansas State 82-65 Wednesday night to clinch its sixth straight Big 12 regular-season title outright.
Xavier Henry scored 15 of his 19 points in a tight first half and Kansas (28-2, 14-1) wore down Kansas State in a foul-filled game to extend the nation's longest home winning streak to 59 games. The Jayhawks are 32-2 against Kansas State in the Big 12 era and will have the No. 1 seed in next week's Big 12 tournament.
Kansas State (24-5, 11-4) relied on the guard combination of Jacob Pullen and Denis Clemente to keep it close while its front line struggled with foul trouble. Clemente had 21 points and Pullen scored 15 of his 20 in the first half, while the five biggest Wildcats combined for 19 points.
No. 3 Kentucky 80, Georgia 68
At Athens, Ga., John Wall had 24 points and Kentucky clinched at least a share of the Southeastern Conference regular-season championship by beating Georgia.
Patrick Patterson added 17 points and 10 rebounds for the Wildcats, who scored the first 12 points of the second half and maintained control from there.
Kentucky (28-2, 13-2 SEC) moved one game ahead of Vanderbilt in the race for the league's best record.
No. 22 Maryland 79, No. 4 Duke 72
At College Park, Md., Greivis Vasquez scored 20 points, including a clutch basket with 37 seconds left, and Maryland beat Duke to move into a tie with the Blue Devils atop the Atlantic Coast Conference standings.
Jordan Williams had 15 points and 11 rebounds for the Terrapins (22-7, 12-3), who have won six straight since losing by 21 at Duke on Feb. 13.
Nolan Smith scored 20 for Duke (25-5, 12-3) and Jon Scheyer had 19.
No. 7 Purdue 74, Indiana 55
At West Lafayette, Ind., E'Twaun Moore scored 21 points and Chris Kramer had a season-high 18 in his final home game to help Purdue (25-4, 13-4 Big Ten) beat Indiana.
If Purdue wins at Penn State Saturday, the Boilermakers will earn a share of the Big Ten championship. It would be Purdue's first conference title since 1996.
Verdell Jones III scored 15 points for Indiana (9-20, 3-14), which lost its 11th straight game.
No. 8 New Mexico 73, TCU 66
At Albuquerque, N.M., Darington Hobson had 20 points and 14 rebounds while Roman Martinez added 19 points in his final game at The Pit, leading New Mexico over TCU to secure the Lobos' first outright conference title in 16 years.
New Mexico also tied a school record for most wins — a 28-5 mark set in 1995-96.
No. 14 BYU 71, Utah 51
At Salt Lake City, Brandon Davies scored a career-high 21 points and Michael Loyd Jr. had 18 as BYU beat Utah, giving the Cougars their third sweep of the state rivalry in the last four seasons.
The Cougars (27-4, 12-3 Mountain West) were able to celebrate their seventh win over the Utes in the last eight meetings, but BYU's streak of three straight regular-season conference titles ended earlier in the night when New Mexico clinched the championship with a win over TCU.
No. 15 Wisconsin 67, Iowa 40
At Madison, Wis., Jon Leuer scored 18 points, Trevon Hughes and Jason Bohannon celebrated Senior Night in style and Iowa didn't offer much resistance against Wisconsin.
Hughes scored 15 points while Bohannon added 11 points and a career-high nine rebounds in the final home game for both of the Badgers' senior guards.
No. 16 Tennessee 80, Arkansas 73
At. Knoxville, Tenn., Scotty Hopson scored 15 points to lead Tennessee over Arkansas.
The Volunteers shot 54.5 percent and had five players score in double figures, but it was a technical foul called on coach Bruce Pearl that sparked Tennessee (22-7, 10-5 SEC) as it finally pulled away from the Razorbacks (14-16, 7-8).
No. 20 Temple 57, Saint Louis 51
At St. Louis, Lavoy Allen had 18 points and 14 rebounds, and Temple beat Saint Louis to remain tied for first place in the Atlantic 10.
The Owls (25-5, 13-2) have won six in a row and 14 of 16.
Willie Reed led Saint Louis (19-10, 10-5) with 16 points.
No. 23 Texas A&M 76, Okla. St. 61
At College Station, Texas, Donald Sloan scored 19 points and Texas A&M led from start to finish against Oklahoma State.
The Aggies (21-8, 10-5 Big 12) used strong 3-point shooting to take an early lead and a 14-0 run in the opening minutes of the second half.
James Anderson led the Cowboys (20-9, 8-7) with 27 points.
No. 25 Xavier 82, Fordham 56
At New York, Jamel McLean scored 13 of his 16 points in the first half and Xavier handed Fordham its 20th consecutive loss.
