SLIPPERY ROCK — Scoring is great, but defense is what stirs emotion in the Slippery Rock High girls basketball team.

"I love defense," said Rockets' coach Adrienne Orris. "Defense excites me."

Orris must have been downright delirious by her team's defensive effort in a 58-22 win over Corry in the first round of the District 10 Class AAA playoffs at Slippery Rock University Saturday afternoon.

To say the Rockets were stifling is an understatement,

Corry (13-10) managed just three points and one field goal in the first half as Slippery Rock led 27-3 at the break.

The Beavers shot 5 percent from the floor in the first two quarters.

By the middle of the third quarter, things managed to get even more dire for Corry as the Rockets led 39-4 and the Beavers were 1-for-29 shooting.

There was little explanation from Corry coach Sarah Grab, who's search for words was about as arduous as her team's search for points.

"I give them all the credit in the world," Grab said. "They are a very, very good team."

Corry's plan was to slow down the Rockets by breaking their press and being patient in the offensive end. For the most part, it was able to do that. The only thing missing was the shots at the end of the possessions.

Slippery Rock (20-2) blocked shots, forced poor ones and thoroughly flustered their foes.

"It is a mentality thing," Grab said. "We had some shots blocked, then we were afraid to go inside. We were completely frustrated."

The Rockets had just as many assists as a team as Corry had points.

By the time the Beavers were able to finally mount a consistent offense, the game had long since been decided.

"We scored (19) points in the second half," Grab said. "If we could have done that in the first half, this wouldn't have been so bad."

Karly Rhoads scored 22 points for the Rockets, including 12 in the third quarter when she was a perfect 5-for-5 from the floor.

Adele Campbell added 10 points and a handful of blocked shots for the Rockets.

But the story of the game was the mauling Slippery Rock defense — something Orris has been crafting with her team for three years.

It's a high-risk, high-reward kind of defense.

The rewards were great Saturday.

"You can't win if you are not willing to take risks," Orris said. "You can't beat the best. For three years, I've been teaching them to take risks, that it's OK because they have teammates behind them to help."

Slippery Rock will play Franklin Wednesday at a site and time to be determined.
