It's time to get a little selfish.

High school team wrestling is over and the race for individual glory begins this weekend with WPIAL Class AAA section tournaments.

Butler, Knoch and Seneca Valley will compete in the Section 3 event Saturday at Fox Chapel. Matches get under way at 10:30 a.m. with the final round slated for 6 p.m.

The top four placers in each weight class advance to next weekend's WPIAL Tournament.

"We've been geared toward the team thing all year," Butler coach Scott Stoner said. "Now we change direction and ask the guys to think only about themselves.

"Now it's time to see how far you can go."

The Golden Tornado have three No. 1 seeds in the tournament: Eric Tuck at 135 pounds, Mike Crawford at 140 and Cole Baxter at 171. Baxter (31-0) is the defending section and WPIAL champion and is Section 3's lone unbeaten wrestler.

Only North Allegheny with five has more top-seeded wrestlers in the field. Seven schools have at least one No. 1 seed, including Seneca Valley's Nate Cully at 145 pounds.

Crawford has experienced knee problems this season.

"His knees are better, but psychologically, they may hold him back a bit," Stoner said.

The Tornado qualified 12 wrestlers for the WPIAL meet last year and hope to get at least 10 through this time around.

Seneca Valley coach Tom Tomeo said he hopes five Raiders can get through in an injury-plagued season. Heavyweight Dave Bonetti missed the entire campaign.

Dan Papst and Nick Marchi are on the bracket at 152 and 189 pounds, respectively, but might not see action due to prolonged injuries.

"We haven't decided if they'll be ready to go or not," Tomeo said. "Nate Cully's sitting on 99 wins, so he's looking to hit a milestone down there.

"It's been a tough year for us, but I wasn't going to let it bring us down. We can make some good things happen Saturday and we're excited about that."

Knoch doesn't have a No. 1 seed, but Grayson Hixon at 119 and Kevin Green at 152 are contenders to move on.

"Joe Hlebiczki is worth a mention at 215, too," Knoch coach Mark McLaughlin said. "He'd been out for two weeks, but returned to practice Monday.

"I decided to hold Britanny Faust out of the section meet to keep her healthy. The women's tournament season is coming up and I want to be fair to her. She had a winning record against boys, though, this year."

Hixon is trying to become a four-year WPIAL qualifier.
