Howard J. Steighner, 77, of Butler died early Saturday morning at the VA Butler Healthcare.

He was born in Herman, July 10, 1932, a son of the late Raymond C. and Mary Kellar Steighner.

He was retired from the tool and die department of the former Butler plant of the Pullman Standard Car Manufacturing Co., where he had worked for 19 years until the plant closed. He also had always worked as a self-employed home painter.

He was a member of the St. Paul Roman Catholic Church in Butler and was a veteran of the Army, having served in Korea with the 65th Infantry Regiment during the Korean War.

Howard was known for his great sense of humor and as a man who enjoyed simple pleasures. He liked people and always gave everyone his own personal nickname. He most enjoyed his view of the world from sitting on his front porch. He was a hard-working, loving father who treasured his family.

Surviving are two sons, James Steighner and his wife, Kathy, of Herman and Ronald Steighner and his wife, Michelle, of Meridian; two daughters, Marlene Uram of Butler and Sally (Mrs. Kerm) Minich of Connoquenessing; two sisters, Joan Tomsey of Herman and Rita Marzullo of Butler; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Lane Steighner; a son-in-law, David Uram; a brother; and a sister.

<B>Steighner </B>— Friends of Howard J. Steighner, who died Saturday, Jan. 9, 2010, will be received from 5 to 9 p.m. today at the <B>Geibel Funeral Home</B>, 201 E. Cunningham St., Butler. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the St. Paul Roman Catholic Church, 128 N. McKean St., Butler. Private interment will take place at Butler County Memorial Park cemetery.The St. Paul Women's Organization and Christian Mothers will recite the rosary at 9:40 a.m. Tuesday at the church.Additional information can be found and condolence messages placed for his family at www.geibelfuneralhome.com.
