Panthers' recruiting ended months ago

PITTSBURGH — Coach Dave Wannstedt has been working intently on recruiting since Pitt ended its first 10-win season since 1981 by beating North Carolina in the Meineke Car Care Bowl the day after Christmas.

His recruiting class for 2011, that is.

Pitt's 24-man class for 2010 that was announced on national letter of intent day Wednesday was essentially wrapped up months ago, with the final two commitments coming in December. One player, wide receiver Todd Thomas, committed nearly two years ago but spent last season at a prep school.

There were no surprises as the class stayed intact, with no last-minute defections or additions. One player, junior college defensive back Saheed Imoru, enrolled last month.

Wannstedt's latest class appears to be strongest along the defensive line, led by 280-pound T.J. Clemmings, the top player in New Jersey according to Scout.com. Pittsburgh-area linemen Aaron Donald, from Penn Hills, and Khaynin Mosley-Smith, from Woodland Hills, could be starters within a year or so.

Clemmings chose Pitt over Georgia, Michigan, Notre Dame and Ohio State and looks to be the elite player in a deep class, although one not loaded with national-level recruits.

"We're selling out games, getting national exposure, and our kids are graduating," Wannstedt said Wednesday. "We're putting guys in the NFL. ... So, there's enough strong foundational things happening that (people) can look at, and it makes them want to be part of it."
