SRU takes 2 from Eagles

SLIPPERY ROCK — As the Slippery Rock University men's basketball team warmed up before the game, a green sledgehammer sat at midcourt.

During the game, the sledgehammer rested behind the SRU bench.

The Rock might as well have used it to smash Lock Haven repeatedly in an 84-59 PSAC West win over the Bald Eagles.

"(The sledgehammer) was a little internal motivation," said Slippery Rock coach Kevin Reynolds. "The last performances we didn't feel were up to our standards. We felt like we let a lot of people down, including ourselves, so it was a reminder to the guys to play harder than the other team longer than the other team."

The Rock went on a pair of prodigious runs in the first half to build a 46-20 lead.

SRU scored 10 straight points to overtake Lock Haven early in the game and used a 20-0 spurt at the end of the half that, for all intents and purposes, put the game out of reach.

Maron Brown had 13 points and eight rebounds in the first half and finished with his ninth consecutive double-double with 15 points and 13 boards.

Maurice Douglas led SRU with 19 points, including six 3-pointers, and 11 players scored for The Rock.

"He's one of the cornerstones of our team," Reynolds said of Douglas. "When we recruited him last year, this was the time when he played his best. No one was better in the league last year in the last week of January through February and March than Maurice."

It seems Douglas is heating up in late January once again.

He was 6-of-10 shooting from 3-point range and added five assists.

He had plenty of help.

It was a complete performance for a team that desperately needed one following three straight conference losses.

"We needed this game," Reynolds said. "Now we're 2-3. We don't feel great, but 2-3 is better than 1-4."

Several unlikely stars also emerged for The Rock.

Gary Satterwhite scored 10 points off the bench. Butler graduate Jade Burka also had a solid game with five points and seven rebounds in just 12 minutes.

Seldom-used big man R.J. Rush scored four points and pulled down two big rebounds in just six minutes of action.

SRU women's basketball coach Laurel Heilman wore a T-shirt at practice Tuesday that read: "Victory goes to the team that makes the fewest mistakes."It was more of a plea than a message to her team. The Rock heeded the words on the shirt, making the fewest miscues in a 60-50 home win over Lock Haven. It was SRU's first conference win and one that was most welcome for more than just its place in the standings."We needed this. It has been almost a month (since the last win)," Heilman said. The Rock had lost its four PSAC games this season by an average margin of 18 points. Worse, SRU led at the half in three of those losses. It was able to avoid a second-half swoon Wednesday after taking a 32-24 lead into the break. This time, Heilman tried something new, starting the half with a lineup that clicked the best together in the first half.It appeared the experiment would fail. The Rock (4-14, 1-4) turned the ball over on three of its first four possessions, but it recovered. The lead grew as big as 17 points late in the half.Grace Palucis led The Rock with 14 points. Julie Molloy had 12 points, seven rebounds and seven assists.Kristen Kudrick scored 27 points for Lock Haven.
