The Moniteau Decathlon team participated Dec. 5 in the second Academic Sports League Competition of the season. This competition focused on math, science, essay, prepared speech and interview.
The team finished second, after Collegiate Academy. McDowell, Slippery Rock and North Clarion completed the top five overall.

Luke Franchuk of Butler will study at Menendez Pelayo International University in Sevilla, Spain. Franchuk, a sophomore history major, is a graduate of Shady Side Academy. He is the son of Gary and Patrice Franchuk.•
Brooke Lyon of Butler will study at Menendez Pelayo International University in Sevilla, Spain. Lyon, a sophomore Spanish major, is a graduate of Butler High School. She is the daughter of James and Barbara Lyon.•
Rebecca Ray of Sarver will study at the University of Barcelona, Spain. Ray, a sophomore Spanish and French major, is a graduate of Knoch High School. She is the daughter of Gary and Kathleen Ray.•
Brigette Lefever of Saxonburg will study at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. Lefever, a sophomore media art major, is a graduate of Knoch High School. She is the daughter of John Lefever and Laura Mentel-Lefever.———
Brianna Brucker of Butler accepted admission to Edinboro University. She will enroll in September and study elementary and special education. A student at Knoch High School, she is involved in cheerleading and FCCLA. She is the daughter of Brenda and Tom Brucker.———The 2010 edition of "Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges" will include the names of the following Thiel College students from Butler County:

Derek Workman of Valencia.———Ten Westminster College students attended a Dec. 4 workshop on international security hosted by the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs at the University of Pittsburgh.The following students from Butler County attended:•
David Bauer of Butler, a senior political science major. A graduate of Slippery Rock High School, he is the son of Herman and Rebecca Bauer.•
Ryan Johnston of Valencia, a sophomore political science major. A graduate of Mars High School, he is the son of Patrick and Mary Johnston.The students are in an international law and organization class taught by Dr. Michael Aleprete, assistant professor of political science, who accompanied the group.The focus of the workshop was nonstate threats. Morning sessions were panel discussions on topics that included "Insurgency and Post-Conflict Contingencies," "Violent Armed Groups in Africa" and "Homegrown and Suicide Terrorism." Students participated in a crisis simulation in the afternoon.
