Raiders face talented Central Catholic team

JACKSON TWP — He may be a newcomer to the coaching ranks of the WPIAL, but Seneca Valley's Don Holl is quite familiar with the Raiders' first-round opponent in the district playoffs.

The Raiders will battle Pittsburgh Central Catholic at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Fox Chapel in a Quad A matchup.

"We played them when I (coached at Erie Cathedral Prep)," said Holl. "It's a program that's won two PIAA titles in the last five years and they have a lot of former players dotting Division I rosters around the country.

"We're not surprised by our draw," Holl added. "Central was one of two or three teams we thought we'd get."

The Vikings (7-2) went 4-1 and placed second in the Big East Conference behind champion Woodland Hills.

Following a 27-3 loss to the Wolverines Oct. 2, the Vikings closed the regular season with wins over Penn Hills, Plum, Kiski Area and Fox Chapel by a combined score of 140-27.

Sophomore tailback Damian Jones-Moore is the workhorse in Central's I-formation offense. He's tallied 1,359 rushing yards, 17 total touchdowns and has added 13 catches for 167 yards.

"He's a great player and he deserves all the attention he's getting," said Vikings coach Terry Totten.

Central's quarterback position isn't as settled. Senior David Smyers began the year as the team's starter, but sophomore Perry Hills has been getting the playing time the last three weeks.

Hills has completed 20 of 36 passes for 362 yards, five touchdowns and one interception.

"We felt we needed to change things up a bit," Totten said. "I think Perry has played pretty well."

While the Vikings have played teams that run a spread offense, Seneca Valley's version is not identical to any of them.

"They move the ball well on offense," said Totten. "Their quarterback (Donny Holl) makes good decisions and it's going to be a challenge for us. They're a good football team."

Holl will be looking for another solid game from his offensive line after the unit helped the team rush for 204 yards last week in a 35-17 win over Butler.

It was the Raiders' highest total on the ground since piling up 238 yards in Week 1 against Norwin.

SV's starting front will include center Tom Long, left guard Pat Kulp, left tackle Tyler Boozel, right guard Jeff Palmer, right tackle Marshall Campbell and tight end Andrew Smith.

"The interesting thing about those guys is, we moved several of them from different positions," said Holl. "A few of them had never played a down of offensive line.

"The line is getting better and better," he added. "(Assistant coach) E.G. Sipp has done a good job with those guys."

The SV-Central winner will play the winner of the Woodland Hills-Baldwin matchup in the quarterfinals.
