Moniteau tears through Redbank
NEW BETHLEHEM — Moniteau coach Jeff Campbell had an idea about how he wanted to attack the Redbank Valley defense in Friday's Keystone Shortway Athletic Conference matchup.
He scrapped it and went to Plan B.
The Warriors (6-3, 6-3) carried 39 times for 321 yards and five touchdowns in a 49-21 rout of the Bulldogs.
"The game plan was to come out and throw," said Campbell. "They were giving us the run, and we're a team that is going to take what they give us.
"Our offensive line has shown they're pretty good," he added.
James Shope led the way, rushing for 117 yards on 21 carries and scored on runs of 30, 10 and 11 yards.
Shope also caught a 27-yard scoring pass from Kyle Armagost, who added another scoring pass as well as a rushing touchdown.
Shope scored the game's first two touchdowns, a 30-yarder midway into the first quarter, then capped a seven-play, 55-yard drive by reaching the end zone from 10 yards out on the first play of the second quarter. His conversion run made it 15-0.
Shope, who has rushed for 1,175 yards on 178 carries and 19 touchdowns this season, made his only misstep of the game when, on a Redbank punt, the ball clipped his heel while backing away from it.
Redbank's Pat Goheen recovered the ball at the Moniteau 35.
Six plays later, on a fourth-and-6 from the 15, Shiloh Buchleitner scored on a keeper to pull the Bulldogs (3-6, 3-6) to within eight points.
That's as close as the they would come as Moniteau added two scores before halftime, a 14-yarder by Armagost and a 15-yard pass to Tony Campbell from Armagost to open a 29-7 halftime advantage.
"Maybe we were too aggressive and that's what hurt us," said Redbank coach Brandon Rapp. "(Moniteau) has athletes and weapons who do well."
Moniteau tacked on a pair of third-quarter scores — a 27-yard pass to Shope from Armagost and an 11-yard run by Shope.
"I was disappointed in the fact of how it went, but not how our kids played," said Rapp. "There were times we were tired, but never once did we quit."
With the mercy rule in effect to open the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs scored on consecutive possessions.
Quarterback Brandon Bain engineered an eight-play, 80-yard drive, capped by a 1-yard score by Goheen.
Less than five minutes later, Goheen caught a slant pass from Bain and broke away for a 39-yard touchdown.
Moniteau's Jay Wiles closed the scoring when he broke free for a 56-yard score on the first play of the ensuing drive.
"The one thing we've stressed is we have to make teams beat us. Don't beat ourselves," said Campbell. "This group of kids have been to the low, been to the bottom. To be at that point, I'm not sure where the season (could go).
"We were not going to let the season slip away. We showed that last week (in a 22-21 victory over Karns City)," he added.
