John P. Cavanaugh Sr.
John P. Cavanaugh Sr., 92, of Newhaven Court, Butler, died Tuesday afternoon at his residence.
He was born in Washington, Pa., Oct. 4, 1916, a son of the late John and Catherine Burns Cavanaugh.
John was a disabled veteran of World War II. He had served as a second lieutenant with the 111th Infantry in the South Pacific and was wounded in action.
He then worked for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania as a parole agent in Philadelphia and Williamsport and retired as the district superintendent of the Pennsylvania Board of Probation and Parole for Butler County and most of Western Pennsylvania.
He was a member of St. Fidelis Catholic Church in Meridian, VFW Post 249 in Butler, American Legion Post 778 in Lyndora, the D.A.V. in Butler and had been a life member of Elks Lodge 170 in Butler.
Following his retirement, John had lived in Cocoa Beach, Fla.
Surviving are his wife, Evelyn, who he married Oct. 1, 1982; four sons, John P. (Barbara) Cavanaugh of Grove City, David Cavanaugh of Butler, Thomas (Linda) Cavanaugh of Crystal Lake, Ill., and William (Debbie) Cavanaugh of Arvada, Colo.; four daughters, Jane (Don) Croll of Butler, Catherine Cavanaugh and her husband, David Roberts, of Mechanicsburg, Pa., Maureen Cavanaugh-Brown and her husband, David Brown, of Connoquenessing and Eileen (Jeff) Dix of Galion, Ohio; three stepsons, John C. (Shelby) Haines of Phoenix, Ariz., Thomas L. (Nancy) Haines of Charlotte, N.C., and Steven H. (Joyce) Haines of Maine, N.Y.; a brother, James (Shirley) Cavanaugh of Washington, Pa.; a sister, Patricia (Carl) Troy of Beaver Falls; 15 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, William and Charles Cavanaugh; and a sister, Catherine Murphy.
<B>CAVANAUGH </B>—<B> </B>Friends of John P. Cavanaugh Sr., who died Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2009, will be received from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the <B>Geibel Funeral Home</B>, 201 E. Cunningham St., Butler. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Fidelis Catholic Church-Meridian, 125 Buttercup Road, Butler. Private interment, with full military honors, will take place at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, Bridgeville.The family requests memorial donations be made to either Butler Healthcare, the VA Butler Healthcare Medical Center or St. Fidelis Catholic Church.Information also is available at www.geibelfuneralhome.com.
