Summit boosts economy

CRANBERRY TWP — Overflow visitors from Pittsburgh's G-20 summit are finding their way to hotels in the township.

At the summit, which will be held at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center Sept. 24 and 25, President Obama will meet with leaders representing 85 percent of the world's economy.

This meeting means a lot of people will be looking for places to lay their heads after hours spent discussing important monetary issues.

Jerry Andree, township manager, said he has heard that hotels are getting many calls for the G-20 dates.

Ron Antionucci, general manager of the Marriott Hotel in Cranberry Township, said Thursday the hotel on Route 228 will be full on Sept. 24, 25 and 26.

He said the end of September is traditionally a busy time of year anyway with many companies choosing it for training sessions and corporate meetings.

But the G-20 is putting the hotel in the 80 percent to 90 percent occupancy area, Antionucci said.

Marianne Caputo, sales manager for the Four Points by Sheraton Pittsburgh North, said she is close to sold out between a convention with 400 guests and those checking in for the summit.

"It really is a great thing," she said.

Tammy Schaum, general manager of the Fairfield Inn by Marriott on St. Francis Way, said her hotel has gotten some reservations for the G-20, but right now it is getting more calls from groups who seem to be comparing prices.

"But with Pittsburgh selling out, I'm sure we'll get some of the overflow," she said.

It is unknown if reservations are reaching hotels in the Butler City area, as calls to those businesses were not returned Friday.
