Alexandra Miller of Renfrew was awarded a Trustee Scholarship by Allegheny College.The scholarship is awarded based on academic excellence and extracurricular and leadership activities.Miller is a 2009 graduate of Butler High School.———
Zachary and
Patrick Jones, the sons of Matt and Laurie Jones of Butler, were selected to participate in the C-MITES summer program for academically talented students at Carnegie Mellon University.Zachary will attend the green robotics course, and Patrick will attend the K'Nex geometry course.Zachary is a fifth grader at Aquinas Academy, and Patrick is a third grader at Aquinas Academy.———
Brittany Pryor of Slippery Rock will serve this summer as a summer orientation adviser at Gannon University.Advisors are current Gannon students who volunteer to help implement the university's summer program and help new students and parents with orientation.Pryor is the daughter of Fred and Jackie Pryor and is a graduate of Slippery Rock High School.———
Phillip Heasley was accepted for enrollment this fall at Edinboro University.Heasley is a 2009 graduate of Butler High School, where he participated in varsity track, BTTV and worked on political campaigns.He plans to major in broadcasting.Heasley is the son of Stephen and Elaine Heasley of Butler.———
Tim Smith was accepted for enrollment this fall at Edinboro University.He is a 2009 graduate of Butler High School, where he participated in the Junior R.O.T.C. program, student government and W.A.T.C.H.He plans to major in political science and prelaw.Smith is the son of Richard and Sandra Smith of Butler.———
Angela Shaffer of Slippery Rock High School, and
Nathan Barry and
Courtney Nickle, both of Butler High School, were each awarded $1,200 in state awards through the Pennsylvania Elks State Association.The students were judged on scholastic performance, employment, volunteerism, community involvement and financial need.The following students were awarded $400 scholarships:
Jessica Clouse, Phylicia Collins, Alex Connell, Kira Eckstein and
Amber Terwilliger, all of Butler High School,
Daniel Sheehan and
Jennifer Taylor, both of Karns City High School, and
Travis Tasker of Knoch High School.The following received $250 awards:

Stephanie Russell of Butler, a sophomore computer science major at Cedarville University, worked with four other female students from Cedarville to design a computer game geared toward middle school and high school girls. Their program, an RPG adventure game called Hott Lead, won second place.———Central Electric Cooperative announced its
2009 Good Neighbor Scholarship winners. Each of the 15 cooperative members will receive a $1,000 scholarship to use at a post-secondary educational institution of their choice. Candidate selection was based on an essay illustrating their leadership and contributions to both community and school.Scholarship winners are:
