Cheers & Jeers . . .

The Slumber in the Slammer fundraiser planned for Friday night is an ideal way to introduce the new county prison to law-abiding members of the community.

For a $20 donation, a person will be permitted to stay overnight in the prison. The "inmates" will get a mug shot for another dollar.

People wanting an early release will be granted one for $10 more.

Proceeds from the event will benefit Butler County Children and Youth Services, the county Mental Health Association, United Way of Butler County and the Victim Outreach Intervention Center (VOICe).

The event won't be boring from the standpoint of how the one-night inmates will spend their time while in the new lockup. There will be tours, demonstrations, food, music, games and drawings. The following morning the departing inmates will be treated to a breakfast.

Meanwhile, a public open house is scheduled for noon to 5 p.m. June 7, giving the public an additional opportunity to see the inside of the new facility. Of course, the mood inside the prison that day will be more cheerful and relaxed than when the new facility begins operating as the county prison.

Ron Kuzmovich, chairman of the Clarion County Election Office, is accepting blame for a ballot error in which a Karns City School Board candidate, Brenda Ealey, was omitted from the ballots in two Clarion County precincts. That is as it should be; it's ultimately his responsibility to ensure that ballots are correct. But the fact is that a serious omission occurred and that error could cost Ealey a board seat in November that she otherwise might have won.Although winning a Republican nomination, she lost a Democratic nod — likely because of her absence from the two Clarion ballots. That is why Kuzmovich is deserving of this jeer, despite his acceptance of blame. Another reason is that he had plenty of time to ensure that the ballots in question were correct — but failed to do so.The election office chairman acknowledged that the only way to prevent that kind of mistake is to proofread — something he said he would be more diligent about in the future.Nonetheless, Kuzmovich is paid, in part, to ensure that such mistakes don't occur. There's a question of whether the mistake ever would have been noticed if personnel of Butler County's election office had not discovered the mistake, after Clarion County sent its Karns City results here.In addition to portions of Butler and Clarion counties, the district includes a part of Armstrong County. There can be no guarantee that elections always will be without problems. For example, mechanical glitches can occur with voting machines. But there is no acceptable excuse for the ballot itself being wrong. From any vantage point, what happened in Clarion County smacks of carelessness.

Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby was right in not bowing to the superstition surrounding the Prince of Wales Trophy after the Penguins won the Eastern Conference championship.Last year, Crosby refused to touch the trophy, fearing that doing so would jinx the team in terms of winning the ultimate prize, the Stanley Cup. This year he not only touched the trophy, but also carried it during a quick victory skate.Last year's refusal didn't mean victory for Pittsburgh in the Cup final. The Penguins lost the series 4-2 to the Detroit Red Wings, who again will be Pittsburgh's opponent in this year's final series. This year the Penguins are a more mature team, and hopefully better prepared to battle their opponent — and knowing better what to expect as a result of last year's experience.Touching the Prince of Wales Trophy will have nothing to do with how the Penguins fare. If they play their best hockey, there's little doubt that they'll bring the Stanley Cup to the Steel City.
