MEADVILLE, Crawford County — The state Fish and Boat Commission canceled Thursday's scheduled fish stocking of Connoquenessing Creek in Butler.

This decision was made after learning of a report Wednesday from the Department of Environmental Protection that found high levels of arsenic in the soil, according to a game commission news release.

DEP recommends avoiding areas of exposed soils, including the stream banks, in the area of Father Marinaro Park, down to Negel's Car Wash near the Monroe Street Bridge.

DEP does not believe fish can or will absorb the contaminate in a form harmful to humans. Fish and Boat Commission biologists also indicated arsenic accumulation in previously stocked trout is not a major concern since they have only been in these waters for a short time, the news release stated. The commission is working with DEP to evaluate future stocking plans.

There are no fish consumption advisories for arsenic anywhere in Pennsylvania.
