Rock nips IUP, hosts PSAC tourney

SRU’s Maurice Douglas drives through IUP defenders Thomas Young, left, Ashton Smith (30) and Sean Christiansen (32) during The Rock’s 73-72 men’s basketball victory Saturday at Morrow Field House.

SLIPPERY ROCK — How to win a game in 36 seconds? Slippery Rock found a way.

Trailing by four points Saturday at Morrow Field House, SRU coach Kevin Reynolds called a timeout with 36 seconds remaining. Moments later, he had a 73-72 men's basketball victory over Indiana (Pa.) and The Rock's first home PSAC Tournament game in 18 years.

"They made one more play than we did," IUP coach Joe Lombardi said. "Sometimes this game isn't so hard to figure out."

IUP (21-6, 10-4) trailed 68-67 in a back-and-forth game when Darry Webb drained a 3-pointer with 1:57 to play. Thomas Young added a layup with 40 seconds on the clock and the Crimson Hawks' lead was 72-68.

After Reynolds' timeout, Kyle Camper was fouled and sank both free throws with 32 seconds to play. With 22 seconds left, Young missed the front end of a one-and-one and The Rock's Maron Brown cleared the rebound, getting the ball to Camper.

"I wanted to make something happen fast," Camper said. "I looked up the floor and the only one I saw ahead of me was Maurice (Douglas). So I got him the ball."

Douglas took the pass, took one step and let loose a 3-pointer that was all net with 16 seconds left. IUP brought the ball up the floor and called time with 11.7 seconds to go.

"All we wanted to do was play defense and not allow an open layup," Camper said. "If they make a play to beat us, they beat us."

They didn't.

IUP's Gerald Brooks got to the rim, but Brown got a hand on his shot. Denell Stephens flipped the ball away from the basket and into the hands of Douglas as time expired.

There was contact on the play, but Lombardi didn't suggest a foul should have been called.

"I don't think they fouled him," he said. "Yeah, there was a bump, but that play didn't cost us this game. We didn't put it away."

"Those two guys (Brown and Stephens) have been doing the job for us all year," Reynolds said. "It seems like they get a double-double every night."

They did so Saturday.

Stephens had 20 points and 17 rebounds, Brown 12 points and 11 boards. Douglas had 23 points, including five 3-pointers.

The win — SRU's eighth straight — accomplished a lot for The Rock (20-7, 11-3). It gave SRU its first 20-win season since 1990-91. It also means SRU will host Indiana for a 7 p.m. tipoff Tuesday in the first round of the PSAC Tournament.

A loss would have sent The Rock to IUP for the first round.

"We wanted to play at home (Tuesday) for sure, but the biggest thing for us was getting that 20th win," Reynolds said. "You can't get to the NCAA playoffs without 20 wins."

The top eight teams in each Division II region receive NCAA playoff bids. The Rock entered Saturday's game ranked 10th in the region. IUP was ranked sixth.

"This win could do a lot for us," Reynolds said. "Our goal all along has been to make the NCAA Tournament. Ever since our loss at IUP (94-78 on Jan. 31), every game has been a must win."

Young paced four Crimson Hawks in double figures with 18 points.

"This game is no indication as to what may happen here Tuesday," Lombardi said. "Every game is different. Kids' focus and attitudes change from today to tomorrow."

Notes: The lead changed hands 12 times. ... Camper had nine assists Saturday, extending his PSAC single-season record to 288, most of any player in the country at any collegiate level this year. ... Stephens has scored 536 points this season and ranks third in the PSAC in rebounding, fourth in scoring.
