Dohns' compatibility rooted in differences
VALENCIA — When Bill and Jane Dohn got married in 1945, people said it would never work.
"I was 19, and he was five years older than me," said the former Jane Moore. "I was 5 foot 1 and he was 6 foot 2."
With 13 inches separating their line of sight, each still noticed the other when Jane moved into his Pittsburgh neighborhood.
And since that time, not much divides them.
"Our next big argument will be our first," Bill is fond of saying.
Arriving in the neighborhood at age 13, Jane recalls liking Bill immediately. "As I got older, I thought he was pretty cute, she said.
Also with an eye for character, Jane approved of his behavior with friends.
"Nobody swore, nobody smoked, nobody drank," she said, describing a work ethic also evident as Bill helped his father with maintenance duties at a local church.
Today, she holds the same admiration.
"He never collected an unemployment check in his life," she says of her husband, despite his many years in construction.
Bill said he also immediately was taken with Jane. "When I saw her, I said 'That's for me,'" he said.
But the couple didn't begin to date until they were several years older. Jane recalls fearing he was too comfortable at home with his parents, since he took a long while to initiate a courtship.
"(But) he wised up, and we got married," she said.
More than 68 years after they met, the Dohns both say they are happy they did, citing a compatibility that remains today."I married her because she's a talker," Bill said."I married him because he isn't," Jane countered."We're still in love," she said.Between Bill's work in construction and Jane's business as a flea market vendor, the couple worked side-by-side in their property rental business. In their spare time, they traveled and learned to dance.Since retiring, Jane broke her back twice through continued dancing. But the Dohns say such setbacks haven't stalled their happiness."You make your own fun," Jane said."We have good times. Just to be together is good," her husband added."The best thing I ever did in my life is marry this girl."The Dohns live at The Arbors, an assisted living facility in the St. Barnabas Health System complex in Valencia. They have a daughter, Kathleen Jost of Pittsburgh. They also have a grandson.
