Margaret R. Smith, 84, of Zelienople, formerly of Cranberry Township, died Thursday at the Passavant Retirement Community.

Born April 15, 1924, in Zelienople, she was the daughter of the late George and Iva Knauff Rape.

Mrs. Smith was a member of the Oak Grove Lutheran Church, New Sewickley Township.

She received her bachelor of arts degree in education from Slippery Rock State Teachers College, now Slippery Rock University, and retired in 1988 as a fifth grade teacher in the Seneca Valley School District after 25 years.

Margaret took more than 30 trips with her husband, including five trips to Hawaii, as a member of the Elder Hostel Travel Organization. She also was a member of the Friends of Christ, a Lutheran seniors group; the Butler County Retired Teachers Association, and the Zelienople Historical Society.

She is survived by a daughter, Cindy Knoechel and her husband, Bruce, of Zelienople; two sons, Randall V. "Randy" Smith and his wife, Barbara, of Zelienople and Martin B. "Marty" Smith and his wife, Kimberly, of Beaver Falls; two grandchildren, Amy Knoechel and Aaron Knoechel and his wife, Lesley; a sister, Fonda Jones of Florida; and nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grand nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack L. Smith, who died May 16, 2002; a daughter, Margaret C. "Peggy" Smith, who died in 2005; and a brother, Merle Rape.

<B>SMITH</B> — A memorial service for Margaret R. Smith, who died Thursday, Nov. 27, 2008, will be held 7 p.m. Wednesday at Seaman Memorial Chapel of Passavant Retirement Community, 401 S. Main St., Zelienople, with the Rev. John J.
