Lynford Wayne "Lyn" Gilbert, 90, of Winchester Court, Renfrew, died at 2:43 a.m. Sunday at Saxony Health Care.

Born Sept. 11, 1918, in Blairs Corners, Clarion County, he was the son of the late Ralph C. Gilbert and the late Hattie Mae Best.

Mr. Gilbert was a retired mechanical engineer for Hughes Aircraft in Los Angeles, Calif. He retired at the age of 80 and came home to Pennsylvania in 1999.

He was a member of the First English Lutheran Church.

Mr. Gilbert was an alumni of Carnegie Mellon University.

He was a chief ammunition supply officer of the 13th Air Force in the South Pacific during World War II.

While at Hughes Aircraft, he designed the gimballing system on the F14 and F18 airplanes and the missile launcher on the Bradley Tank among other items.

He enjoyed nature, and he hiked Mount Whitney in California. He also enjoyed music, literature and language study.

Mr. Gilbert is survived by his wife, Eleanor Jones Gilbert, who he married Nov. 26, 1947; a son, David Lyn Gilbert of Bedford, N.H.; a daughter, Diane Louise Gilbert of Redondo Beach, Calif.; three grandchildren, Stephanie Gilbert, Patrick Gilbert and Allison Gilbert; two brothers, Chester Gilbert of Saxonburg and Clyde Gilbert of Natrona Heights.

Mr. Gilbert was preceded in death by a sister, Sara; and a brother, Walter.
