New era on SV mat

Seneca Valley Sean Frederick battles with Blackhawk Josh Wright in the 171 pound match at Seneca Valley High School.
Raiders roll in Tomeo's debut, 69-9

JACKSON TWP — Tom Tomeo has his first dual match win as Seneca Valley's wrestling coach.

And it came in dominating fashion.

Seven Raiders tallied pins and SV lost just two of 14 matches in a 69-9 home win over Blackhawk Wednesday night.

SV is now 1-1, aside from the team placing 12th out of 21 teams at the Gateway Tournament earlier this month.

The Raiders' dual match defeat came against Fox Chapel.

"There's a different coaching staff and that means a lot of transition," said Tomeo, who took over SV's varsity program a couple of months ago. "It's a challenge. I'm happy with where we're at, but I'm not satisfied. That's probably the best way to put it."

Jake Perri got SV off to a good start Wednesday with an 8-4 decision over Blackhawk's Clayton McGeary in the 103-pound bout.

The Raiders then tallied four pins in the next seven bouts, interrupted only by three consecutive forfeits by Blackhawk.

Those pins went to Colton Schiever (112), Aaron Schettler (119), Dan Papst (140) and Nate Cully (145).

After Cully's victory, the Raiders held a 45-0 lead.

Ryan Behning (160), Sean Frederick (171) and Jordan Williams (215) also tallied wins via pin.

Blackhawk's two victories came with a 5-2 decision by Kyle Braddock at 152 pounds and Alex Lonnett's pin in the 189 bout.

Picking up forfeit wins for the Raiders were Grant Evans (125), Jason Hildum (130), Nick Phillips (135) and David Bonetti (285).

"The guys are excited and are communicating well," said Tomeo. "We try to do things that will bring the team together. We went bowling one night at Freeway Lanes and played some dodgeball.

"The young kids are doing well," he added of his underclassmen. "A few of them are lacking when it comes to technique, but we're working on their foundation right now. After that, we'll get into the technique."

The Raiders will travel to Hampton on Saturday.
