NEW YORK — The New York Mets said the money lost by their ownership group in Bernard Madoff's alleged Ponzi scam will not affect team operations and that the team is not for sale.

Mets chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon said the family's holdings are diversified and that the loss will not affect operations of the high-spending team, whose $138 million opening-day payroll was third in Major League Baseball.

IRVING, Texas — Thought to be out for the season because of a neck injury, Adam "Pacman" Jones returned to practice with the Dallas Cowboys and is expected to play Saturday night against Baltimore, both at cornerback and returning kicks, after having missed one game.Coach Wade Phillips said the herniated disk discovered last week has healed, perhaps because he already had the problem and it was only aggravated by a hit he took two games ago in Pittsburgh.

LOS ANGELES — Rafael Furcal accepted a three-year contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers worth at least $30 million, and the Atlanta Braves accused the star shortstop of reneging on a deal they thought was agreed to earlier this week.Furcal can earn an additional $3 million if he remains healthy during the three guaranteed seasons of the contract, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press.

SAN DIEGO — Dave Smith, a former All-Star closer who holds the Houston Astros record for games pitched, died. He was 53.Former big leaguer Tim Flannery said Smith apparently died of a heart attack but the official cause of death wasn't known.Smith was an All-Star with Houston in 1986 and 1990. He had 216 saves over 13 seasons. He played with Houston from 1980-90 before finishing his career with the Chicago Cubs.His 563 outings with the Astros is tops on the club's list, and his 199 saves ranks second.

ALIQUIPPA — Federal prosecutors in Pittsburgh said they have broken up a cocaine ring headed by the nephew of Hall of Fame running back Tony Dorsett.Authorities say 31-year-old Anthony A. Dorsett, of Aliquippa, and 12 others have been selling crack and powder cocaine since 2003. Authorities say Dorsett was arrested Saturday in West Virginia.Tony Dorsett starred at neighboring Hopewell High School before attending Pitt, where he won the Heisman Trophy in 1976.Dorsett's son, Anthony D. Dorsett, played in the NFL from 1996-2003.
