7:38 p.m. Wednesday — A would-be robber reportedly left a downtown store empty-handed even after claiming in a note that he had a gun.Aclerk at the Dollar General store on North Main Street told police that the unknown suspect made a small purchase just before the attempted robbery.The clerk described the man as black with an afro hair style, and dressed in a black turtleneck and blue jeans.

8:37 p.m. Wednesday — Ahydraulic bottle jack was found at Eberhart and Evans City roads. The owner can claim the property at the police station at 290 S. Duffy Road, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. weekdays.5:10 p.m. Wednesday — An unknown thief stole a purse from the shopping cart of a customer at the Wal-Mart in Butler Commons. The victim, who police did not identify, left the cart unattended for a few minutes and when she returned the purse was gone.2:50 p.m. Wednesday — Nicole Brown, 24, of Petrolia is accused of shoplifting a dozen items of merchandise at the Butler Commons Wal-Mart. Asearch of her purse also turned up a syringe and spoon. Police said Brown faces charges of retail theft and possession of drug paraphernalia.

4 p.m. Wednesday — Cars driven by Ronald Harry, 77, of Meadville, Crawford County and Patricia David, 71, of Grove City collided on Route 208 in Springfield Township. Police said Harry was cited for pulling into the path of David's car.
