Homer Wayne Walker, 83, of Ames, Iowa, died Thursday at the Mary Greeley Medical Center.

Born May 22, 1925, in Saxonburg, he was the son of William Howard and Margaret (Logan) Walker.

A graduate of Butler High School, he received a bachelor's degree from Penn State in bacteriology, a master's degree from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, in 1953; and a doctorate from University of Wisconsin, Madison, in 1955.

He was an Ames residence since 1955 and was a professor of food technology at Iowa State University for 35 years. He retired in 1990.

During World War II, he served as a technical sergeant with the U.S. Army in the occupation of Japan.

Mr. Walker was a member of the Bethesda Lutheran Church, where he was a past president. He was a charter member of ACTORS, a longtime member of the Lions, and a member of the Ames Brush Club.

He had appreciation for art, literature and music.

Surviving are his wife, Donna Smith, whom he married July 20, 1963, in Burlington, Iowa; a son, Douglas (Nancy) Walker of Phoenix, Ariz.; a sister, Gladys Neel of Butler; and three grandsons, Jacob, Matthew and Adam.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Howard.

<B>WALKER </B>— Visitation for Homer Wayne Walker, who died Thursday, Oct. 30, 2008, will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Bethesda Lutheran Church. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the church with Pastor Joel Wight Hoogheem officiating. Burial will be at the Ames Municipal Cemetery.Memorials may be made to the Bethesda Lutheran Church, the Lutheran Services in Iowa (Beloit) or the charity of the donor's choice.Arrangements are being handled by the <B>Adams Funeral Home and Cremation Service</B>, Ames.
