Warriors bomb SRU
SLIPPERY ROCK— It came — and performed — as advertised.
Despite missing regular quarterback Tim Roken, who was out with a broken thumb, East Stroudsburg's vaunted passing game produced 410 yards Saturday at N. Kerr Thompson Stadium.
The aerial assault resulted in a 38-21 college football victory over Slippery Rock University.
Sophomore quarterback Matt Marshall threw for 369 yards and four touchdowns for the Warriors (9-2), who defeated SRUfor the first time since 1975.
"It's what we do,"East Stroudsburg coach Denny Douds said of throwing the football.
The victory occurred on the 46th anniversary of The Rock's 13-6 victory over East Stroudsburg in the 1962 championship game. Douds, a SRUgraduate, was an offensive guard and captain on the Slippery Rock team.
"I've been thinking about that game a lot today,"Douds said. "It's great coming back here and enjoying the hospitality this university provides."
Besides Marshall's 369 yards passing, receiver Sam Shuman took a lateral and completed a 41-yard bomb to Drew Stem, setting up the Warriors' second touchdown.
SRU(5-6)wound up with only its fifth losing season in 21 years under coach George Mihalik. The Rock honored its 12 seniors before the game.
One of those seniors, Brad Galvan, made his first and only start Saturday and threw for 226 yards and two touchdowns.
Both scores went to fellow senior Terry Grossetti, the first coming on a 41-yard strike with six seconds left in the first half, pulling The Rock within 17-14 at intermission.
"We definitely had momentum going into the second half,"Mihalik said.
SRUgot the ball to begin the second half, but on fourth-and-1 at the East Stroudsburg 40, Mihalik elected to punt.
East Stroudsburg answered with an 80-yard touchdown drive and built a 38-14 lead one play into the fourth quarter.
During the third period, SRUgained 47 yards on six successive running plays, setting up second-and-goal from the 1-yard line. Two runs by Ryan Lehmeier and a fourth-down try by Damarcus Cleckley all fell short.
"Iguess I made the right decision punting on that fourth down,"Mihalik said. "When you can't get a yard on three plays after running the ball all the way down the field ... you're just not going to win."
An errant punt snap — the ball sailing over Kyle Witman's head for an 18-yard loss — set the Warriors up for a 22-yard TDdrive during that ill-fated third quarter.
On the plus side, Grossetti had the two touchdown catches, senior defensive back Sam Morant recovered two fumbles and intercepted a pass, and senior Jonathan Molnar had seven tackles.
"Those are nice memories,"Mihalik said of the seniors' performances. "But those guys would trade all of that for a win."
