SRU dinner raises hunger awareness

SLIPPERY ROCK — The 13th annual Empty Bowls dinner to increase hunger awareness will be Monday.

The Institute for Community, Service-Learning and Nonprofit Leadership at Slippery Rock University will host the dinner from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Multi-Purpose Room of the University Union.

Empty Bowls is a national event that works to eliminate hunger. The annual event at SRU offers a meal of bread and soup served in bowls made by SRU art students and volunteers.

People take home their bowls as a reminder of hunger worldwide.

Soup ingredients are donated by businesses and farms. Entertainment will be provided.

Proceeds from the event benefit the Feed My Sheep Food Cupboard, the Butler Area Agency on Aging and New Castle's I Care House food programs.

"This year's goal is to continue our long-standing tradition of keeping citizens in Butler County off the waiting list for home delivered meals," said Ian McGinnity, SRU graduate assistant and dinner organizer.

Tickets are $7 for students and $12 for nonstudents. Advance tickets are available at SRU at the institute in the Robert A. Lowery Center, the University Union Information Desk, Weisenfluh Dining Hall and the SGA Bookstore.

Tickets are available off campus at the Pennsylvania Center for Environmental Education on Main Street and at the Slippery Rock True Value on Grove City Road.

Tickets will also be available at the door.
