'Jackets use balanced effort to sting Bucs
FREEPORT — All three phases of the game worked for the Freeport HighSchool football team.
The offense was productive, the defense made stops when it needed them the most and the special teams prevented Burrell from taking advantage of excellent field position as the Yellowjackets beat the Buccaneers 21-14 in an Allegheny Conference matchup Friday night.
The pace started off quickly, with both teams scoring on their initial possessions.
Freeport (3-1) took the opening kickoff and marched 71 yards in just five plays before Tom Blythe's 33-yard touchdown run gave it an early 7-0 lead.
The Yellowjackets' offensive line created a huge hole on the counter play, allowing Blythe ample running room on his TD jaunt.
Burrell (2-2) followed suit with an equally impressive six-play, 79-yard drive, highlighted by Tony Highfield's 33-yard touchdown run.
The Yellowjackets then stung the Bucs when, on a third-and-6 from their own 26 late in the first quarter, quarterback Alex Isenberg rolled to his right and hit Derek Durand running down the sideline for a 74-yard touchdown pass to put Freeport on top 14-7.
It was the only pass completion of the night for Isenberg, but it was a big one.
Burrell put together a nice drive to start the second half.
Starting at their own 37 and mixing the run and the pass effectively, Burrell marched down the field. On fourth-and-goal from the 2, Highfield again found the end zone to tie the score at 14.
Burrell had a chance to go ahead for the first time in the game in the fourth quarter, but, facing a fourth-and-1 at the 2, quarterback Camren Nelson rolled to his right and threw an incomplete pass to end the threat.
Freeport got the go-ahead touchdown with 4:48 left in the game when Isenberg scored on a sneak from the 1. That drive was sparked by Austin Shockey's 37-yard run.
The Bucs last shot came up short when, on fourth-and-10 from midfield, the Yellowjackets swarmed Nelson for a sack that sealed the Freeport victory.
The game was highlighted by two 100 yard rushers. Shockey had 110 yards on 13 carries for Freeport, while Burrell's Highfield led all rushers with 18 carries for 120 yards.
