The Butler Branch of

American Association of University Women recently named its 2007-08 secretary

Ellen Garbuny as the Woman of the Year.Garbuny of Butler is a social worker in a private counseling practice and has been in social work for 21 years.She has been married to Don Best for 28 years and has two children, a daughter in graduate school at American University and a son in his senior year at Allegheny College.She enjoys reading, exercise and knitting.She has served the association as vice president of programing, secretary for two terms, nominating committee member and has worked on many projects the association does each year such as Girl Talk, Lunafest and the book sale. She has served the association consistently for 19 years.This year the association will celebrate its 75th year of activity in the Butler area.For membership information, call Mary McGinnis at 724-282-1459.——

Participants in the <B>2008 Summer Reading Program</B> at the Evans City Library concluded the program with a party at EDCOPark Aug. 20 and a performance by comic magician Steve Haberman.The Catch the Reading Bug program enrolled 112 children who read or listened to 2,746 books. Children were encouraged to read for 15 to 20 minutes per day during the summer and to read at least two books about real insects or other bugs.The following students were recognized for their extra efforts in the kindergarten through fourth grade group:<B>Tarah Feeney, Andrew Freyvogel, Megan Hixon, Hirschy Kirkwood, Stacia Freyvogel, Jacob Kozora, Natalie MacKay, Sammy Mill, Megan Smelscer, Alyssa Tollerton, Lauren Smelscer, Abby Staskiewicz, Adison Staskiewicz, Kaelah Nelson, Cheyenne Mannas, Hannah Smelscer, Jacob Hixon, Tyler Tappe.The following students were recognized for their extra efforts in the Read to Me program:</B>Colby Feeney, Shannon Goelz, Sydney Kozora, Joel MacKay, Connor Tappe, Jack Smelscer, Zac Tollerton, Logan Tappe and<B> Shaylee MacKay.———</B>

Winners at the Butler Duplicate Bridge Club Sept. 4 were:First: <B>Ray Kramer</B> and <B>John Kristufek</B>. Second: <B>Bob Freemon</B> and <B>George Cross</B>.
