Edwin Foster's letter to the editor states that my championing of the faculty of reason leads to "a world that contains no guidance for what is right and what is wrong, what is just and what is unjust." Nothing could be further than the truth, as reason is indispensable to morality. Morality, simply put, is a code of values to guide one's choices and actions. An action is moral if it furthers one's life and immoral if it is deleterious. It is only through reason, not the dogmatic dictates of a religious leader, that one can make these calculations. Morality is a guide to living, not an homage to a supernatural deity.

When Christian ideas on morality are taken seriously, pronouncements such as those by State Representative Daryl Metcalfe become the norm and, contrary to letter writer Jennie Ease, are a cause for worry because of what they reflect regarding the thought processes of our elected officials.
